Thermaltake Silent BTX CPU Cooler

Thermaltake is one of the leading names in high performance CPU coolers, so it is no surprise that they are one of the first with an upgrade for the stock Intel BTX Type 1 cooler. They actually have a couple Type I cooler upgrades, and even a Type II, but this review will be focused on the Thermaltake Silent BTX CPU Cooler, model number CL-P0191. Featuring a thermally controlled fan, solid copper base, and dual heatpipes, the CL-P0191 seems well prepared to tackle the cooling requirements of an Intel CPU installed in a BTX environment.

Crazy PC was kind enough to send over the CL-P0191 for review, and in case you are unfamiliar with them, let's introduce you. Crazy PC has been in business since 1999, and unlike the bulk of computer component e-tailers, they aren't located in California (they're actually in Michigan). They specialize "in hard to find computer parts mainly in the area of computer cooling, case mods, and gaming accessories." Browsing their inventory shows many components for gaming and enthusiast style ATX systems, and this cooler may be the lone representative of the BTX form factor over there.

Before looking at the CL-P0191, let's look at some of the features and specifications taken from the Crazy PC website...

Features

• Copper base with heat-pipe design
• Dual heat pipes for better heat dissipation
• High-density aluminum thin-fins with high surface area for superior heat dissipation
• 92x38mm Cooling Fan with low noise (< 28 dBA)
• Comes with Honeywell PCM45F thermal pad pre-installed.

One thing not listed above is a comment on the Crazy PC website regarding the Honeywell thermal pad. They suggest replacing that with a good quality thermal paste, and in the course of testing we will see if they are right.  I have never had good cooling performance with one of these thermal pads, but it will be tested anyway just to see what you can expect right out of the box.  If you decide you agree with the statement on the Crazy PC website, they also offer a wide selection of thermal pastes to help make them your one stop shop for this upgrade.
